While Isaac has now been downgraded to a tropical depression, the effects of the storm continue to threaten thousands of residents in the Gulf South. Louisiana officials say a controlled release of water has begun at an Isaac threatened, endangered dam at a southwest Mississippi state park. At the same time, crews began intentionally breaching a levee stressed by the storm's flooding in Louisiana's hard-hit Plaquemines Parish south of New Orleans.

The 2,300 foot long earthen dam on the Tangipahoa River about 50 miles north of New Orleans threatened to break Thursday. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said at an afternoon news conference that the dam was damaged at Lake Tangipahoa in Mississippi's Percy Quinn State Park.

Mitt Romney’s choice of Paul Ryan as his running mate led to a wave of pundit accolades. Now, declared writer after writer, we’re going to have a real debate about the nation’s fiscal future. This was predictable: never mind the Tea Party, Mr. Ryan’s true constituency is the commentariat, which years ago decided that he was the Honest, Serious Conservative, whose proposals deserve respect even if you don’t like him.
But he isn’t and they don’t. Ryanomics is and always has been a con game, although to be fair, it has become even more of a con since Mr. Ryan joined the ticket.

CBS News
It's been a busy week since Mitt Romney named Paul Ryan as his running mate. "The Ryan Effect" has put some oxygen into the race. The polls don't show an uptick for Governor Romney the way other candidates have been helped by their vice president pick, but conservatives love Paul Ryan. And he showed this week he could both defend Governor Romney's Medicare plan and also attack on that issue, which is very important for them.

A look at "The Ryan Effect" on the 2012 campaign
www.cbsnews.com
Although his poll numbers haven't jumped like other candidates with new VP picks, Romney appears thrilled with Paul Ryan.

Under the budget plan offered by Republican vice presidential nominee Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., Mitt Romney would "pay less than 1 percent in taxes each year," President Obama charged during a New Hampshire campaign swing Saturday.

"That's a pretty good deal, just paying one percent in taxes; you're making millions of dollars," the president said in his second remarks of the day in Rochester, N.H., repeating the claim he first made earlier in Windham, N.H., that the plan put forth by Ryan -- the House Budget Committee chair would cut Romney's tax rate to less than 1 percent.

In a N.H. campaign speech Saturday, the president slammed Romney and Ryan on taxes, Medicare

Stumping in the swing state of New Hampshire on Saturday, President Obama hit Mitt Romney on a topic that's haunted the GOP presidential contender all summer: taxes.
Obama continues tax attack on Romney - The Hill's Ballot Box

The president hammered the Democrats' long-running charge that Romney's tax plan favors the wealthy over the middle class – an accusation that's only gained steam since the presumptive GOP nominee tapped Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) as his running mate.

Barack Obama seemed like a good choice for president four years ago, but now, Newsweek columnist and professor of History at Harvard University Niall Ferguson says it's time for change. In 2008, Ferguson was just as excited as anyone, but now he's become disenchanted: "The question confronting the country nearly four years later is not who was the better candidate four years ago. It is whether the winner has delivered on his promises. And the sad truth is that he has not."…http://bit.ly/QPrgcm
